Group Leader, Intelligent Mechanisms Group, NASA Ames Research Center

NASA Ames Research Center Computational Sciences Division seeks candidates
for group leader of the Intelligent Mechanisms Group (IMG). The focus of
the IMG is to advance the state of the art in robotic autonomy by
integrating advanced user interfaces with on-board perception, reasoning,
and decision-making technologies into complete proof-of-concept systems.
The group's research activities address NASA's need for robust planetary
surface rovers, orbital servicing robots, and autonomous deep spacecraft.
The group is comprised of 13 full-time staff members as well as graduate
students, visiting research scholars, and visiting scientists. Research
activities in the group include partially and fully immersive virtual
reality interfaces, vision-based navigation, and sensor-based terrain
reconstruction and rendering. Facilities available to the group include
outdoor and submersible robotic vehicles, high-end Silicon Graphics
computer systems, immersive display and input devices, and electrical and
mechanical fabrication shops. Additional information on IMG activities can

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and directing
the research activities of the IMG. These activities include internal
development of relevant technologies, collaboration with other activities
at Ames as well as other NASA, government, and university research groups.
We are seeking a candidate with a proven ability to administer and develop
programs in complex, competitively-funded government/contractor
environments. The ideal candidate should hold an advanced degree (PhD or
comparable experience) in a relevant discipline, and should have strong
interpersonal and management skills, strong communication (written and
oral) skills, group management experience, and a record of obtaining
contract and grant funding. The candidate should have research experience
in one or more of the following areas: mobile robotics, preferably outdoor
systems; computer vision; planning/scheduling, machine learning, or
adaptive control; dynamic simulation; and advance user interfaces,
preferably virutal reality-based systems.

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Ames Research Center is NASA's
designated Center of Excellence for Information Technology. The center
conducts a broad program of research and development in aeronautics,
information technology, and space science. The Computational Sciences
Division of the Ames Research Center is chartered to conduct an
inter-disciplinary program of research and development in robotics,
artificial intelligence, human factors, and man-machine interface in
support of NASA's missions. Activities at the center range from deep space
missions such as the recently launched Lunar Prospector mission to the
moon, hyper-sonic wind tunnel research for the next-generation RLV, to
artificial intelligence research aimed at fully automating spacecraft
operations.

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and other
qualifications. The position is part of NASA's Civil Service expected to be
filled at the level of GS-15, with a salary range from $75525 to $94287.
