PhD Scholarship in Action Perception.

Department of Psychology, University of Hull, Hull, UK

Project Title: Investigating how our perception of human behaviour is
distorted in "real life"

Supervisors: PI: Dr. Nick Barraclough (Psychology) | CI: Dr. Tjeerd
Jellema (Psychology) | CI: Dr. James Ward (Computer Science)

Project details:
A PhD scholarship is available in the laboratory of Dr. Nick Barraclough
to investigate action perception under simulated naturalistic
conditions. We combine psychophysical, immersive virtual reality and
transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques in order to study the
neural mechanisms underlying action perception in humans.

The project will explore how visual adaptation influences action
perception and biases judgements of human behaviour. The project is a
multidisciplinary collaboration between the Departments of Psychology
and Computer Science, and will use the unique flexibility afforded by
our large scale immersive virtual reality environment to investigate
action perception under laboratory conditions and simulations of real
life experience.

Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates with, or
expecting to be awarded, at least an upper-second class honours degree
or equivalent in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, or related
areas. Previous research experience, programming skills (e.g. MATLAB) or
a willingness to learn computer programming skills will be advantageous.

Details on how to apply and downloadable application forms are available

The closing date for applications is 30th April 2010
