The Department of Ophthalmology invites applications and nominations for up to four
tenure-track positions in the Department of Ophthalmology. Applicants must hold an
MD, PhD or MD/PhD degree. Two of these positions are for senior scientists, with
qualifications suitable for endowed chairs and for the position of director of research.
The other positions can be at a more junior level.
The Department is seeking individuals who will complement and reinforce its current
research strengths in retinal degeneration and glaucoma. These areas could include gene
therapy, stem cell biology, tissue engineering and neuroprotection. Vision researchers at
Storm Eye Institute comprise a well-funded, vibrant and highly interactive community.
The research initiatives are supported by outstanding core facilities for mass spectroscopy
and imaging. The Department is located in the Storm Eye Institute and consists of 21
faculty, 7 of which are full-time research faculty with NIH support of $2.5 M in 2010.
There are seven endowed chairs in the Department, two of which are research chairs
currently available for suitable candidates.
The Medical University of South Carolina is in the midst of an exciting period of growth
with the recent NCI designation for the Hollings Cancer Center, the obtainment of a
Clinical and Translational Science Award, and completion of two new research buildings
in Bioengineering and Drug Discovery as well as new clinical outreach facilities. There
is a new College of Medicine initiative to establish a Center for Genetics. These are
