The department of Medical and Biological Informatics of the German Cancer Research Center, DKFZ offers PhD and PostDoc positions for graduate students in computer science. All projects are within the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 125 "Cognition-Guided Surgery".

Ph.D. Projects:

1.      Knowledge-based Navigated Liver Surgery

The aim of this project is to create a knowledge-based assistance system for planning and performing complex liver surgery. It will act in a similar way to a human assistant while permanently retaining vital knowledge to be transferred, accumulated and reused for future operations. For this purpose, preoperative, perioperative and post-operative information will be amassed and combined in a knowledge base that incorporates both factual and practical knowledge. To assist in finding an optimal surgical strategy, the system will gather all the relevant information available on the individual patient, such as laboratory, functional and morphological parameters ('perception'). It will then use the dynamic knowledge base to assess the current case ('interpretation') and recommend an appropriate surgical strategy based on previous operations with known clinical outcome ('action').

2. Knowledge-based Assistance System for Reconstructive Cardiac Valve Surgery

Reconstructive cardiac valve surgery requires the precise assessment and interpretation of the complex geometry and function of the heart valves. The aim of the project is to create a knowledge-based assistance system, which will continuously provide the surgeon with relevant geometrical and functional knowledge, thereby acting as a new, quantitative decision-support tool. 3D parameters will be collected alongside pre- and intra-operative clinical parameters. All parameters will be correlated with the postoperative results, transferred into the knowledge base of the CRC/Transregio and interpreted by the system.

3.      Knowledge-based Multispectral Tissue Analysis

The aim of the project "Knowledge-based Multispectral Tissue Analysis" is the computer-assisted assessment of tissue properties and risk factors under consideration of relevant medical data and different imaging techniques. Medical imaging technology will be combined with approaches from pattern recognition and classification for data analysis. A knowledge base of past cases will be employed for improving and objectifying the interpretation of different sources of information with respect to diagnosis, prognosis, therapy planning, and follow-up examination.

For a successful application we expect:

* M. Sc. degree in Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science

*         Excellent programming skills (C/C++)

* Self-motivated personality, creativity, and capacity for teamwork

* German language skills are beneficial

PostDoc Project:

1.      Software Infrastructure

The aim of the scientific service project "Software Infrastructure" is to develop and disseminate a common software platform and imaging data infrastructure, which will form the foundation for all software developed within the CRC/Transregio. This will connect the partners in such a way that will enable previous achievements to be integrated easily into the cognitive system being striven for. For this purpose, methods and tools for collaboration and seamless integration in the clinical workflow are to be developed.

For a successful application we expect:

* M. Sc. degree in Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science, a PhD degree is beneficial

*         Excellent programming skills (C/C++)

* Self-motivated personality, creativity, and capacity for teamwork

* German language skills are beneficial

We offer:

* Work on exciting interdisciplinary research projects

* MITK software framework featuring access to all useful state-of-the-art algorithms and data for medical image processing

*         Quality managed software development

* Seminar program on medical and technological basic knowledge and methodological and social skills
