NUTHMANN Antje Antje.Nuthmann at ed.ac.uk
Sun Jun 11 14:11:00 -05 2017

The Computational Visual Cognition Lab led by Dr. Antje Nuthmann is moving from the University of Edinburgh (UK) to the University of Kiel (Germany) this summer. For the Kiel lab, we invite applications for two positions, one as postdoctoral researcher and one as research assistant (PhD student). The expected starting date is October 1, 2017 (August 1 at the earliest). The application deadline for both positions is June 30, 2017.

Teaching:
Both positions are part of the Chair in Perception and Cognition at the University of Kiel, and post holders will contribute to the group’s teaching obligations at BSc level (postdoc: 4 contact hours a week, PhD: 4.5; 1 contact hour = 45 min). In principle, teaching can be provided in English, but non-German-speaking applicants are expected to acquire sufficient proficiency in German within the first two years.

Research:
We use eye-tracking to investigate perceptual, oculomotor and cognitive control in everyday visual-cognitive tasks like scene perception, visual search, and reading. We approach these issues with experimental, corpus-analytical, and computational modeling techniques. The lab will be equipped with high-precision lab eye trackers as well as modern mobile equipment (eye-tracking glasses, virtual-reality eye-tracking). For more information, visit http://orcid.org/0000-0003-3338-3434.

PhD position:

Salary for the PhD position is according to the German salary scale (E13 TV-L) at 50%. Funding is available for 4 years until September 30, 2021.

The post holder is invited to complete a PhD in visual cognition. Some experience with eye tracking and some programming skills (e.g., Matlab, R) is desirable but not essential.

Applicants for the PhD position must hold a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in psychology, cognitive science or a related field. If the M.Sc. is not yet completed at the time of application, an official statement should be included to confirm that the degree will be completed by October 2017. Application documents should include a complete CV, copies of transcripts from academic institutions, a letter of motivation (personal statement), as well as the names and contact information of one or two references that could be contacted for information about the applicant.

Postdoctoral position:

Salary for the postdoc position is according to the German salary scale (E13 TV-L) at 100%. The initial contract will be for 3 years, with the possibility of an extension for a maximum of 6 years.

Applicants should have a strong background (desirable) or strong interest (essential) in at least one of the following fields: visual attention and/or psychophysics, eye-movement control, cognitive modeling. Programming skills are an advantage (e.g., Matlab, R). The post holder will be encouraged to develop his or her own research profile in interaction with the groups’ research focus in visual cognition.

Applicants for the postdoctoral position must hold a PhD or equivalent in psychology, cognitive science or a related field. If the PhD is not completed at the time of application, a statement by the thesis supervisor should be included to confirm that the degree will be awarded by October 2017. Application documents should include a complete CV, a list of publications, copies of transcripts of all academic institutions, and a letter of motivation (personal statement). The application should also include the names and contact information of 2 to 3 references that could be contacted for information about the applicant.
