Postdoctoral Fellowship Position in the Dept. of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine & Electrical & Computer Engineering, Rice University

The Papageorgiou/Investigational Targeted Brain Neurotherapeutics Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral fellow to conduct innovative research to study neuromodulation and neurorehabilitative approaches using imaging-based neurofeedback.

Our Laboratory focuses on the following areas: (i) to elucidate the mechanisms that guide plasticity following insult to the brain by using structural, and functional measures; (ii) induce functional plasticity/reorganization of the brain by applying neurofeedback methods, such as real-time fMRI and EEG; (iii) develop optimization neurofeedback approaches via computational modelling; (iv) develop MR-compatible instruments that will assist in examining plasticity for our longitudinal studies.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to assist in the development of a novel fiber optic sensor inside the MR environment. S/he will be responsible to test and optimize the optical imaging hardware and synchronize it with other hardware within our MRI experimental milieu. The candidate should have a strong background in instrumentation design, particularly with experience on building optical imaging systems. Hands on experience with cameras, optical fibers, optical and opto-mechanical components is desired. The postdoctoral fellow will have access to the Bioengineering Core (BEC) facility at Baylor College of Medicine and facilities within the Electrical & Computer Engineering at Rice University, as well as guidance and mentorship from Dr. Fabrizio Gabbiani, Director of the BEC and Professor of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine and Dr. I-Chih Tan, Engineer of the BEC and Assistant Professor of Neuroscience.

The trainee will benefit from: (i) the Core for Advanced MR Imaging Facility at Baylor College of Medicine, which includes a state-of-the art imaging facility with research-dedicated Siemens 3T PRISMA, and 3T MAGNETOM Trio; (ii) the Bioengineering Core at Baylor College of Medicine; and (iii) Engineering and Equipment Resource facilities at Rice University, as the PI has a faculty appointment in the Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Rice University.

Essential Duties
Build a miniaturized MR-compatible fiber optic sensor for a clinical research/medical application.
Prepare and conduct technical presentations.
Document research, and write-up papers in peer-reviewed journals
Work within a team to coordinate resources for real-time fMRI neurofeedback paradigms.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Prerequisite is a Ph.D. in a relevant field: Bio-engineering/Biomedical Engineering; Electrical Engineering; MR Physics; Computer Science, (Bio-) Physics.
Experience in Experimental Physics and Optics
Strong programming experience on Matlab or Python. Knowledge of Unix environment is a plus.
Demonstrated advanced analytical and experimental skills.
Experience developing, calibrating, and fielding optical diagnostics and analysis techniques.
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills to author technical and scientific reports, publications, and invited papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
Good interpersonal communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and be capable to generate original work.
