Graduate Student Opportunity:
Joint position between the US Army Research Labs and The George Washington University

Project:
Visual search—looking for target(s) among distractors—is a fundamental cognitive process that involves a number of abilities (perception, attention, memory, decision making) and is critical for many professions (radiology, security screening, military roles, etc.). Understanding how naturalistic search behavior is guided by the relative influence of task specific demands and features of the environment is critical to interpreting visual perception in real-world settings. This research opportunity will address critical gaps in our understanding concerning the interactive role of visual salience (bottom-up), task goals (top-down), arousal (internal state), and search parameters (e.g., number of potential targets present) on target detection during overt visual search. To address this breadth of issues, this project will leverage collaborations between the Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), located at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds (Aberdeen MD) and the Department of Psychology at The George Washington University (GWU), located in Washington D.C.

Graduate Student Position:
The project is seeking an incoming graduate student who will be involved in all aspects of the scientific process, including experimental design, data acquisition and analysis, and presentation and publication of results. This project will leverage behavioral, big data, eye tracking, and electophysiological methods to systematically investigate visual perception using both constrained and real-world tasks, leading to an enhanced understanding of visual search in everyday environments.

Logistics:
The successful applicant will receive full tuition and stipend for enrollment GWU in the Department of Psychology. Research will be conducted in collaboration with mentors at both HRED at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and at the GWU Department of Psychology. The student will spend time at both locations, with their summer primarily at HRED. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will earn their Ph.D. from GWU and will have extensive hands-on experiences with the many resources available at HRED. This position is limited to US citizens. Stipend = $45K. Interested candidates should contact both Dr. Anthony Ries (anthony.j.ries2.civ at mail.mil) and Dr. Stephen Mitroff (mitroff at gwu.edu).
