detection and fine-grained recognition. The project is ambitious, and
aims at detecting and classifying birds in an airport scenario (to avoid
bird strikes). The project will be carried out in collaboration with two
industrial partners, leading to a prototype (the Bird Control Monitoring
System, BCMS) which will be tested in collaboration with Italian airports.
Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D. in computer vision,
pattern recognition or related areas. The following skills are required:
- solid software analysis, development and debug skills in C/C++, Matlab
and Python.

The following skills will constitute a plus:
- experience with network programming, distributed systems and service
oriented architectures
- experience with video streaming protocols, networked camera systems
- experience with a GPU API such as OpenCL and/or CUDA
- familiarity with design patterns and best practices for software
engineering.

experience will be also considered. The candidate is expected to publish
his/her research results in leading international journals and
conferences, but also to collaborate with the industrial partners with
project meetings, visits at the testing sites etc. Salary will be
commensurate with qualification and experience and **absolutely in line
with international standards**. The duration of the contract is 1 year,
with the possibility of 1-year renewal, and/or hiring in one of the
financing companies.
The Computer Science Department at the University of Verona has recently
been entitled “Department of Excellence” for a research program on
Industry 4.0 which translates methodological aspects of machine
learning, mathematics, physics, into industrial applications. Within the
Computer Science department, the VIPS Lab (vips.sci.univr.it) focuses on
computer vision and pattern recognition topics, with more than 20K
citations in the last 10 years, systematically publishing at top tier
conferences as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NIPS, etc., with funds coming from
Italian and international programs (PRIN, FP7, H2020). The University of
Verona is an equal opportunity employer.
Applications must be sent to marco.cristani at univr.it quoting “BCMS
postdoc position 2018” in the e-mail subject and must include:
- a curriculum listing all publications (possibly including a pdf of
your most representative ones)
- a research statement summarizing your research interests, previous
research experience and accomplishments, and outlining its relevance to
the above topics and the names of 2 referees.
This call will remain open and applications will be reviewed until the
