*Vision Research Special issue on Animal Vision: Optics, Movement and
Ecology*

Darwin was pleased to cite Helmholtz’s observation that ‘that if an
optician had sold him an instrument so carelessly made [as the human eye],
he would have thought himself fully justified in returning it ’. We are now
delighted to invite contributions to an issue of Vision Research on ‘Animal
Vision: Optics, Movement and Ecology’, on the imperfections and
adaptations, benefits and costs of eyes and visual systems across the
animal kingdom, in its remarkable, illuminating diversity. Mike Land has
agreed to write an Introduction to this special issue, and we especially
encourage all those who have enjoyed and been inspired by his work to
contribute.

Submissions should be on primary research, but we hope they will be written
to appeal to the wide readership of *Vision Research* by placing the
findings in a broad evolutionary and functional setting. We are also happy
to consider proposals for reviews. The Journal Portal opens on July 1st,
and the deadline for submissions is 1st October 2018, with a view to
publication in May 2019. Manuscripts will be refereed in the normal way,
with oversight from the Editors. Please contact one of us with any
questions, or presubmission enquires. Proposals for reviews should be made
in the first instance to Daniel Osorio (d.osorio at sussex.ac.uk
