1 PhD position available – Deep Learning Skin Cancer Detection

We have a unique opportunity to pursue doctoral research on Deep Learning, a relevant topic of academic and industrial interest; and acquire an excellent academic and industrial background from top actors in the field.

The focus will be skin cancer detection using Deep Learning, with the aim of developing a new software able to detect and classify skin cancer images from dermatoscopic and total body skin images.

 
The PhD will be developed

 
- partly in the VICOROB lab (University of Girona, Spain), pioneers and recognized experts in medical image analysis, authors of several of the most relevant Total Body Skin Scanner papers.

 
- and partly in Coronis Computins SL (Girona, Spain), in one of the spin-off from the VICOROB group, where the technology from the Total Body Skin Scanner is developed. Also Coronis participates in several European projects.

Deep Learning is one of the key technologies for computer vision. Deep Learning is able to perform detection and classification of images over several other applications.

 
Deep Learning has been applied in skin cancer detection, segmentation and classification using dermatoscopic images, using images like the ones proposed on the ISBI challenges.

 
The core topic of the PhD will extend these databases with new images from referent hospitals, checking the performance of existing algorithms and proposing new ones. Also these algorithms will be applied to Total Body Skin images acquired with our specific device, using these algorithms with TBP is one of the less explored research problems in the field.

* Prepare a doctoral thesis related with the research project

Requirements

* Very good Master degree(s) in Engineering, Physics, Robotics, Computer Science or a related field, with a solid background in machine learning and/or computer vision

 
* Excellent academic background

 
* High personal initiative, independent and structured way of working

 
* Demonstrable programming skills, preferably C/C++, Matlab and/or Python

 
* Demonstrable practical experience and knowledge in Machine Learning, and/or Computer Vision

 
* Convincing appearance, high commitment combined with interpersonal skills

in teams

 
* Fluent English, written and spoken, knowledge of academic English
