Dear
colleagues,
A PhD
position (65%, TVL-13, 3 years), under my supervision, is available in
the research
unit General and Experimental Psychology at
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU)
München (chair: Prof. Dr. Hermann J. Müller). Together, we will examine
how
various factors that are known to affect the allocation of spatial
attention
influence the encoding of information into visual working memory, using
traditional laboratory experiments, online experiments, EEG recordings,
and
computational modelling. Visual working memory is a core cognitive hub
in the
processing of visual information, and attentional mechanisms are vital
to
handle the massive amount of information continuously arriving through
our
senses. By combining knowledge and research techniques from both fields,
we
will aim to advance our understanding of how we perceive the (visual)
world. This
project is well suited for students interested in pursuing an academic
career.
For this
position, an interest in basic (neuro-)cognitive psychology, strong
theoretical
and writing skills, and firm expertise in experimental design and
(standard)
statistical analyses are required. Prior experience with EEG and/or
cognitive
modelling would be a plus. The successful applicant should already have,
or be
keen to acquire, good programming skills (preferably Matlab). Interested
candidates are welcome to establish contact via email to

This project
is part of the DFG Research Unit “Active Perception” and provides
opportunities
for collaborations across various areas of psychology. The unit of
General and
Experimental Psychology has several EEG labs, a lab for behavioral group
testing, a TMS lab, several eye trackers and soon also ample scanning
time in a
new, research-dedicated MRI facility.
The LMU
ranks among the top 10 universities in Europe. Munich, located in the
south of Germany, is regularly ranked among the world’s top cities
for quality of living. It offers a great variety of cultural
attractions,
a large inner-city park within walking distance from the institute, and
easy
access to the scenic pre-alpine region with mountains and lakes. The
unit of
General and Experimental Psychology is a team of international
scientists, with
English as the main language of communication; German-language skills
are therefore
not a requirement for the position.
There is no
firm application deadline, but interviews will be held from mid-November
on
until the position is filled, so that submitting applications early is
advisable. The starting date is negotiable, but should ideally be before
March
2019.
LMU Munich
is an equal-opportunities employer. Given equivalent qualifications,
applications by female and disabled persons will be preferred.
Kind
regards,
Heinrich
René Liesefeld
