Director, Center for Visual Science, University of Rochester, NY, USA

The University of Rochester’s School of Arts, Sciences & Engineering invites faculty applications for the position of Director of the Center for Visual Science (http://www.cvs.rochester.edu<http://www.cvs.rochester.edu/>).

Applicants must have leadership experience and a history of outstanding research accomplishments in vision science. The successful candidate will be expected to lead their own internationally-recognized sponsored research program and to foster the continued success of the Center for Visual Science. This senior level position will come with significant resources and opportunities. The faculty appointment will be in the School of Arts, Sciences & Engineering. The primary home department will depend on the candidate’s main research area, with additional appointments in related disciplines as appropriate.

The Center, founded in 1963, is an interdepartmental program that brings together scientists from a variety of disciplines with the common goal of pursuing excellence in vision research. It currently includes over 40 faculty from 7 different departments, with research areas that range from advanced optical technology for vision correction, corneal and retinal imaging, to cell and molecular biology of eye diseases, mechanisms of visual perception, plasticity and development, visual control of action, multisensory mechanisms, brain imaging, computational approaches to understanding vision, and sensorimotor integration. The Center has longstanding support from the National Eye Institute, including both a Core Center Grant (44 years of support) and a Training Grant (28 years of support).

Numerous opportunities for collaborative research exist across the University of Rochester, within the School of Arts, Sciences & Engineering and the University of Rochester Medical Center, as well as with the nearby Rochester Institute of Technology. The successful candidate will be immersed in an exceptionally rich environment for basic science collaborations, technology development, industry interactions, as well as for clinical and translational research. The Center for Visual Science also plays an important role in a number of university-wide programs in neuroscience, data science, imaging science and the recently launched initiative in augmented and virtual reality.

We will consider applicants from any area of vision science, with emphasis on the ability to lead a highly collaborative research program. The University of Rochester is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community. Candidates are encouraged to identify their strengths and experience in this area. Consideration of applications will begin in January 2019 and continue until the position is filled.
