The School of Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor faculty position. We seek applicants whose central research focuses on cutting-edge biomedical sciences applied to vision and the visual system. The school's research program priorities include cellular and molecular biology of the eye, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, genetics, stem cell biology, biomedical optics and imaging, psychophysics and other topics. Current research strengths and opportunities include the study of hereditary retinal degenerations, retinal physiology, glaucoma, ocular surface diseases (dry eye), the development of refractive errors, biomedical imaging, visual brain function, and visual rehabilitation. Broader institutional strengths include neuroscience, aging, obesity, precision medicine, public health and health policy, and large-scale collaborative patient-based research.
Faculty rank and tenure status will be commensurate with the successful candidate's academic qualifications, skills and experience. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree (OD, PhD, MD, or in combination) and have a track-record of research funding. Successful candidates are expected to develop and sustain an innovative research program with extramural funding support, preferentially from the NEI. Candidates are also expected to advance and contribute to the educational, service, and clinical missions of the school.
