3 Year Postdoc Position: Human Visual Perception of Natural Scenes

*** Please note: the application deadline for this position has been extended to Monday 14th Jan ***

We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to investigate how humans reconstruct the 3D layout of natural scenes from a single 2D image.

This full time, fixed term 36-month post is a critical component of the ROSSINI project (Reconstructing 3D Structure from Single Images). This EPSRC-funded project brings together human and machine vision in a collaboration between the Universities of Southampton, Surrey and Aston (UK) and York (Canada). The overarching aim of the project is to develop a machine vision system that recovers human-like representations of complex natural scenes.

The successful candidate will be based in Professor Wendy Adams' lab at the University of Southampton, UK, and will use human behavioural studies alongside analyses of natural scenes (e.g. the Southampton-York Natural Scenes dataset: https://syns.soton.ac.uk<https://syns.soton.ac.uk/>) to understand and model human visual perception. By working in close collaboration with Professor Bowden (Surrey), Dr. Schofield (Aston) and Professor Elder (York) we will embed human-like visual processing into a machine vision solution for 3D uplift, i.e. producing a 3D scene representation from a single image.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in human vision, with strong computational skills and experience with programming (e.g. Matlab, C, C++). Expertise in image analysis is not an essential requirement of this post, however an interest in computer vision would be an advantage.

Psychology at the University of Southampton encompasses a large and diverse group of excellent researchers, and includes the Centre for Vision and Cognition. Whilst Psychology is ambitious and successful, it is also a very friendly and pleasant place to work. You will join a highly motivated and professional team with many opportunities for professional development. Further details about Psychology at Southampton can be obtained from our webpages at https://www.southampton.ac.uk/psychology

For further details you are warmly invited to contact Wendy Adams via email w.adams at southampton.ac.uk<mailto:w.adams at southampton.ac.uk>. If you are interested in the related postdoctoral positions at the Universities of Aston and Surrey, please contact Andrew Schofield (a.schofield at aston.ac.uk<mailto:a.schofield at aston.ac.uk>) or Richard Bowden (r.bowden at surrey.ac.uk<mailto:r.bowden at surrey.ac.uk>).

Application Procedure: You should submit your completed application form online at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk<https://jobs.soton.ac.uk/>. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Geraldine Lewis (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 3462. *Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who have, or are nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
