Post-Doctoral / Research Engineer Position (M/F)

EURECOM, Sophia Antipolis, France.

Research topics: Deep Learning for Archive Video Analysis

Department: Data Science

Start date: ASAP

Duration: Fixed Term Contract (duration: 18 months)

Description:

The EURECOM Data Science Department is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to
study and develop machine learning methods for video analysis within the ANR
ANTRACT project (https://antract.hypotheses.org) in collaboration with INA
(National Audiovisual Institute) and historians. ANTRACT is a project funded
by the National Research Agency (ANR). It is devoted to the analysis of
images and sounds produced for nearly twenty-five years by the French News,
a film press company created in 1945. This corpus, a major cinematic vector
of the cultural, social and political history of France’s “Trente
Glorieuses” (the glorious thirty years), has never been the subject of a
systematic analysis. It will propose new search approaches on these filmed
archives to the scientific community thanks to recent technological tools of
analysis of the audio-visual and textual contents; i.e. analysis of the
image and the sound, automatic transcription of the speech and textometry.

Your contribution revolves around the improvement of technologies for image
and visual sequence analysis. The automatic detection of certain types of
shots in a show or the detection of a celebrity in a report, are some
examples of the type of (semi)-automated enrichment of audio-visual content
that will allow the detailed annotation of the documents in this archive. In
particular, the richness of these annotations will ensure unequaled access
to the multimedia contents of this corpus by historians’ partners of the
project. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to develop
expertise in the areas of machine learning (deep multimodal approaches),
data mining, research and content indexing in databases of very large
multimedia content (big data).

Requirements:

We are looking for highly motivated candidates to conduct high quality
research work, to publish in prestigious conferences, eager to develop
demonstrators at the forefront of data science and multimedia technology.
Applicants must have a doctorate degree (or equivalent) in computer science
or a related field, preferably on the topic of multimedia content analysis.
They should also have good analytical skills and some experience in machine
learning (Machine Learning, Deep Learning). Excellent programming skills are
expected. A good level of written and spoken French or English is necessary.

Application:

The application file must include a Curriculum Vitae, names and addresses of
three references, a motivation letter presenting the research perspective of
the candidate. Applications should be submitted by e-mail to
secretariat at eurecom.fr <mailto:secretariat at eurecom.fr> with the reference :

EURECOM is a French graduate school and a research center in digital
sciences based in the international science park of Sophia Antipolis, which
brings together renowned universities such as Télécom ParisTech, Aalto
University (Helsinki), Politecnico di Torino, Technische Universität München
(TUM), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Chalmers
University (Sweden) and Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU). The
Principality of Monaco is a new institutional member. The Institut
Mines-Télécom is EURECOM’s founding member.

EURECOM benefits from a strong interaction with the industry through its
specific administrative structure: Economic Interest Group (kind of
consortium), which brings together international companies such as: Orange,
BMW Group Research & Technology, Symantec, Monaco Telecom, SAP, IABG.

EURECOM deploys its expertise around three major fields: Digital Security,
Data Science and Communication Systems.

EURECOM is particularly active in research in its areas of excellence while
also training a large number of doctoral candidates. Its contractual
research is recognized across Europe and contributes largely to its budget.

Thanks to its strong ties set up with the industry, EURECOM was awarded the
“Institut Carnot” label jointly with the Institut Telecom right from 2006.
The Carnot Label was designed to develop and professionalize cooperative
research. It encourages the realization of research projects in public
research centers that work together with socioeconomic actors, especially
companies.
