A postdoctoral position is available in Dr. William Warren’s lab, the VENLab (Virtual Environment Navigation Lab), Department of Cognitive, Linguistic & Psychological Sciences (CLPS) at Brown University, Providence, RI, USA. This is a full-time, 1-year position, with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years based on satisfactory performance. 

The NIH-supported project investigates the visual control of locomotion in dynamic, crowded environments, with applications to sensory substitution for locomotor guidance.  Behavioral experiments focus on the visual control laws for collision avoidance, pedestrian interactions, and collective crowd motion, with the aim of formulating a vision-based pedestrian model.  The results will be used to design and evaluate assistive technology for guiding locomotion with a vibro-tactile belt.  The research makes use of virtual reality techniques (both visual and haptic), kinematic time-series analysis, dynamical systems modeling, and agent-based simulation methods. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science, Psychology, Computer Science, or a closely related field, with a strong research background in perception and/or action. Excellent computational and dynamical modeling skills (Matlab/Python) and statistical expertise (R) are essential; knowledge of time-series analysis, model comparison and simulation methods is highly desirable.  The candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a strong motivation, and work well with a team.  The start date is summer or early fall, 2019.
