It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Giovanni Bruno Vicario, known to his friends as Gianni. Gifted with a sharp mind, he was a keen observer and a brilliant experimental phenomenologist who formed under the tutorship of Prof. Gaetano Kanizsa. Vicario’s main research interests were in auditory and visual perception, the psychology of time and the perception of events. His last publication was a book that appeared in 2011, entitled Illusioni ottico-geometriche. Una rassegna di problemi (Optical-geometric illusions. A review of problems), for which he gathered a great deal of material in an attempt to bring order to such a fascinating yet mazy research domain. Vicario served four times as Director of the Psychology Institute at the University of Padua, and was entitled Professor Emeritus in General Psychology at the University of Udine. His enthusiasm towards experimental research and epistemological issues and debates infected many of his students, who have embarked on academic careers in Italy and worldwide. With an engaging personality, Vicario was always open to discussing research issues with his peers and his students, to whom he was very generous in sharing his insights and his wits. Those who knew him will always remember him as a very honest person. He passed away at his home in Udine yesterday. We will greatly miss him.
