Post-doctoral and PhD positions at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Iceland.

 

We advertise a post-doctoral/research scientist position and a PhD position at the University of Iceland. The positions involve a collaboration between the Faculties of Industrial Engineering and Psychology. The goal of the project is to develop tactile stimulation devices for cochlear implant users where the aim is to augment their auditory experience such as of music or speech. Three other partners, Oticon Medical, the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Southampton are also involved in the project.

 

The post-doc position is intended for 2 years and the PhD position is intended as a 3 year posting.   The PhD position is related to the Nordic Sound and Music Computing University Hub (Nordic SMC - nordicsmc.create.aau.dk/ <https://nordicsmc.create.aau.dk/>).The project is a joint effort between the Icelandic Vision Lab (www.visionlab.is) <http://www.visionlab.is/> at the Faculty of Psychology and the Acoustic and Tactile Engineering (ACUTE) Lab at the faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. This collaborative endeavour offers a stimulating academic environment and is headed by professors Rúnar Unnþórsson and Árni Kristjánsson. The laboratories have an extended network of collaborations, from all over the world and is in many ways unique in this international profile.

The successful candidates will join this vibrant community of graduate students, post-docs, and faculty who all work on varied aspects of haptic, auditory, and visual perception. The laboratories have extensive experience with high quality psychophysical studies and are well funded with grants from the Icelandic Research Fund, NordForsk, The European Research Council and the Research Fund of the University of Iceland. There is good access to necessary equipment for the studies. The labs have high-end equipment for EEG, eye movement studies (EyeLink 1000 Plus), a recently installed Anechoic chamber (5mx4mx3m), in addition to acoustic equipment such as a KEMAR mannequin, HRTF measurement apparatus, multi-channel audio equipment, and various microphones and software. The labs also have the required facilities for developing wearable tactile solutions – both for the wearable fabrics and the audio/tactile electronics in addition to a high-end virtual reality set-up.

 

Qualifications

Experience with experimental psychology software (PsychoPy/Psychtoolbox), programming (Python/MATLAB/C/C++), statistical software such as R, experience with electronics, are all definite benefits but promising candidates showing enthusiasm and willingness to learn these methods will also be considered. Applicants must be strongly motivated, be able to work independently and also possess good cooperative and communicative abilities.

Salary will be according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Union of University Teachers and the Minister of Finance.
