Apologies for the reposting, but we've added a machine learning collaborator to this project, which may be useful information for anyone interested in applying.
----------------------------------------
Richard Murray (Centre for Vision Research, York University; yorku.ca/rfm), David Brainard (Department of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania; color.psych.upenn.edu), and Marcus Brubaker (EECS, York University; mbrubake.github.io) are seeking a postdoctoral fellow for a collaborative project. The successful candidate will work with the PIs on developing machine learning approaches to intrinsic image estimation, with the additional goal of creating new computational models of human visual perception of lightness, lighting, and shape.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in deep learning, Markov random fields, or other relevant machine learning methods. Experience with human visual perception (computational modelling, psychophysics) and programmatic rendering in Blender are also beneficial but not necessary.
The candidate will apply for a VISTA Postdoctoral Fellowship at York University (vista.info.yorku.ca/opportunities/postdoctoral-fellowships) with our support. This two-year fellowship and supplements from the PIs will provide CAD$65K to CAD$80K per year in salary (depending on qualifications), and an additional CAD$8.5K per year for research expenses and networking.
The successful candidate will be based in Richard Murray's laboratory at York University, and there will also be opportunities to travel to work in David Brainard's laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania. The starting date is flexible but will be in early 2022.
The Centre for Vision Research at York University (www.cvr.yorku.ca) is a dynamic and interdisciplinary research cluster with over 40 faculty members investigating biological and computer vision, in departments ranging from physics and computer science to psychology and design. The Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania (www.psych.upenn.edu) is the oldest continuously functioning psychology department in North America and provides a stimulating intellectual environment for the study of the mind and brain. Brainard's laboratory is also affiliated with Penn's Computational Neuroscience Initiative (https://cni.upenn.edu) and MINDCore (Center for Outreach, Research, and Education; https://mindcore.sas.upenn.edu).
For further information, feel free to write to Richard Murray (rfm at yorku.ca), David Brainard (brainard at psych.upenn.edu), or Marcus Brubaker (mab at eecs.yorku.ca).
To apply, send a cover letter, c.v., and contact information for references to Richard Murray (rfm at yorku.ca) by September 10, 2021.
Both host institutions value diversity, and we encourage applications from talented individuals of diverse backgrounds.
