Post-Doc Position at the University of Padua, Italy: Underwater Robotics
Perception (deadline: October 29, 2021)
The Intelligent Autonomous Systems Laboratory (IAS-Lab) of Padua, Italy
is looking for a highly motivated and capable postdoctoral researcher.
The post-doc will be involved in a two-year research project in the
field of Advanced Perception for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV).
Research topics may include one or more areas including (but not limited
to):
- Object detection;
- 6 DoF object pose estimation;
- Multi-sensor 3D robot pose estimation and SLAM;
- 3D reconstruction from images.
The project will involve a leading company in the design and manufacture
of underwater robots that will make its state-of-the-art AUVs available
to the researcher to test the developed algorithms.
The position is a two-years fixed-term full-time researcher position
(with ongoing assessment after one year) and it starts approximately in
December 2021. Expressions of interest should be sent by October 29,
2021. A call for applications will open in November, 2021.
Candidate identikit
*******************
Candidates should have a solid knowledge in one or more topics among:
- Robot state estimation (e.g., localization and SLAM)
- Sensors calibration
- Multi sensor fusion
- Object pose estimation
- Machine/deep learning for perception (e.g., object detection and
semantic segmentation)
- 3D reconstruction from images
and they should have obtained a Ph.D. in one of these research fields.
Candidates should be able to solve practical and theoretical problems
posed to them with great autonomy, by using cutting-edge techniques or
proposing original methods. Very good programming skills in C++ and
Python are required as well, to implement the proposed solutions.
Finally candidates should have adequate writing skills to be able to
publish papers in top conferences (e.g., ICRA, IROS, CVPR, ...) or
relevant journals (TRO, RAL, RAS, ...).
A good propensity for teaching and co-tutoring students is appreciated.
Requirements
************
- Ph.D. degree related to robotics, computer vision, or machine learning
- Very good programming skill in C++ and Python
- A good publication record in relation to your academic age
- Good English language, communication, and presentation skills
Salary
******
The basic salary is according to the UNIPD postdoctoral student salary
agreement and can range between 1450 € to 1600 € / month depending on
the experience of the selected candidate.
About the Lab
*************
IAS-Lab stands for Intelligent Autonomous Systems Laboratory and it is
one of the 28 laboratories of the Department of Information Engineering
(DEI) of the University of Padua, promoted to "Department of Excellence"
by the Italian Government.
The skills available at the IAS-Lab cover various methodological and
algorithmic aspects of intelligent robotics and computer vision applied
to robotics. These include: calibration, navigation, 3D reconstruction
of environments and the interpretation of sensorial data of autonomous
robots such as mobile platforms, industrial manipulators, humanoid
robots and drones.
The fields of application range from service robotics to industrial
robotics and from neurorobotics to agricultural robotics.
The IAS-Lab team is composed of 5 professors and structured researchers,
4 post-docs and 4 Ph.D. students, plus a dozen master students.
The equipment available at the IAS-Lab includes several fully sensorized
robots (e.g., with RGB-D cameras, IMU, LiDAR, etc...). Among these: 2
mobile manipulators, 4 industrial manipulators and 2 humanoid robots.
The laboratory, distributed in two rooms for a total of 250 square
meters, is also equipped with a 3D camera network for markerless motion
capture.
About Padua: the University and the City
*****************************************
The University of Padua is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious
seats of learning. Founded in 1222, Padua’s Studium Patavinum was a
place of study that readily welcomed Italian students and scholars, as
well as those from various European countries searching for cultural
freedom and expression. University of Padua holds over 65,000 students
and 2,200 educators within its 32 departments, accrediting more than
13,000 graduates each year.
The University of Padua has long enjoyed a high-ranking position in both
Italian and international ranking agencies for its quality of teaching,
research activities and student services. Confirming results include the
number of works held in its scientific research archive, a cutting-edge
sector that added 13,000 publications and hundreds of active projects
during the 2020/2021 academic year alone.
The city of Padua is situated in the Veneto Region, in the heart of
north-eastern Italy, and less than 40 km from Venice, Padua is one of
the most beautiful cities in Italy, with over 3,000 years of history.
Padua appears twice in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
