The Agricultural Robotics group at the University of Bonn (Germany), headed
by Prof. Dr. Chris McCool, has an open and fully funded PhD position. The
topic of research will be centered on developing efficient and scalable
networks for robotic perception (semantic segmentation) under resource
constraints.

Scene understanding (to know what is where) is achieved using
computationally intensive deep learnt semantic segmentation networks.
Running these systems on multiple viewpoints (globally and locally) in
real-time on robots remains a crucial yet challenging task.

The successful candidate will develop novel algorithms that perform
efficient and accurate semantic segmentation which can adapt according to
the available compute resources, as well as model uncertainty estimation
approaches. In the end, these systems will be deployed on robots in the
field to enable crop interactive modelling, 3D modelling and even robotic
harvesting.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in state-of-the-art vision
systems and enjoy seeing their work deployed on platforms operating in
challenging conditions in the field. The candidate should also have strong
programming skills (Python or C/C++) and have some experience in Computer
Vision/Deep Learning; ROS experience is also considered a plus (but not
mandatory).

You will have the opportunity to work within a welcoming and very
international group along with a competitive salary (see the links below) at
the TV-L E13 salary scale. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to be part of the PhenoRob Cluster of Excellence
(https://www.phenorob.de/).

Closing Date: November 17th, 2021 with a rolling deadline if necessary.
Applications will be reviewed upon submission.

Start Date: 1st quarter 2022.

How to Apply: all applications should be sent to cmccool at uni-bonn.de and
