Postdoctoral Positions to Study the Functional Recovery of Visual Cortex
at the University of California, Irvine.

Applications are invited for 2 NIH-funded postdoctoral positions in the
Lyon Laboratory at UC Irvine Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology.
Two separate projects are designed to investigate the recovery of visual
cortex function in animals treated for 1) traumatic brain injury or 2)
retinal degeneration. These projects are in collaboration with
laboratories of Dr.’s Robert Hunt or Magdalene Seiler, also at UCI.
Treatments are state of the art and include transplants of embryonic
inhibitory neurons or retinal organoids derived from human stem cells.
Research methods to determine cortical recovery include viral tracers
genetically engineered in the lab, optogenetics, in vivo multi and
single unit electrophysiology, slice physiology through collaboration
and visual behavior testing.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in neuroscience, or any related field.
The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more of the following
areas: 1) in vivo electrophysiology; 2) Matlab programming; 3)
optogenetics; 4) cell-culture; 5) genetic engineering of plasmid DNA.

Lack of experience in any or all of the above techniques can be offset
by a demonstration of skill with a related technique and by high
motivation and enthusiasm to take on new challenges.
Candidates should also not mind year-long pleasant weather, the beach
being a few miles away, and having to drive two hours in order to see
snow in winter.

The positions are for 1 to 2 years, with the option for additional
years. Funding is available now one position, but the start date is
negotiable. Funding for the second position is set to arrive in late
Spring.
Salaries are commensurate with experience based on the NIH scale.

Interested applicants should send a CV, research statement, and the
names and e-mail addresses of 2-3 references to the PI: dclyon at uci.edu

For more information about the position feel free to contact the PI
directly.
