Postdoctoral Research Associate
Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford
This post is funded by the UKRI Physics of Life scheme – Building Collaboration at the Life Sciences Interface. Our PhysFEM (Physics of Fixational Eye Movements) project tests the possibility that the ever-present movements of the eye optimise some aspects of vision. The post-holder will join an interdisciplinary team that combines the mathematical toolkit of optimisation from physics; with computational modelling of early vision using ISETBio; and experimental work to measure eye-movements during specific visual tasks.
The post is full-time, fixed term until 31 March 2025.
The post-holder will design and run psychophysical experiments using our Adaptive Optics Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) to measure the translations of the retinal image over the photoreceptor mosaic that are caused by fixational eye movements (FEMs). They will also play a key part in interdisciplinary discussions with the theory and modelling PDRAs. There will be opportunities to gain experience in project management, and to provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group.
The successful candidate will hold a relevant PhD/DPhil with relevant experience in vision science. They will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline (e.g. psychophysical methods; stimulus control and calibration; human vision; data analysis) to work within established research programmes and be able to manage their own research and administrative activities. Excellent communication skills with previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations are also required along with the ability to contribute ideas for new experiments. Experience of independently managing a discrete area of a research project would also be desirable.
Closing date for applications is midday on Friday 22nd April 2022. It is anticipated that interviews will be held Friday 29th April 2022.
