Arne Valberg

We are saddened to report that Arne Valberg died peacefully on 1 July 2022 at the age of 83. Arne was well known to the color vision community, and a leading figure in many technical aspects of color science. In 2009 he received the Judd award from the International Color Association (AIC). As well, he was a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, and very active in other international settings, such as the Commission Internationale d'lEclairage (CIE).

In addition to his commitments to the technical side of color vision, Arne was strongly interested in the functional aspects of color processing, in both psychophysics and physiology. After his physics degrees at the University of Oslo and the University of Basel, he worked with Bob Boynton in San Diego, and, although keeping a base in Oslo, he worked with Bruno Breitmeyer and Lothar Spillmann in Freiburg (1974–80). At the MPI in Göttingen he pursued these interests in a physiological direction (1981-1991), with Barry Lee, Otto Creutfeldt and others.

On his return to Norway at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology  (NTNU, 1991), he became a professor of Biophysics and Vision Science in Trondheim. He took the initiative to develop a cross-faculty interdisciplinary program in neuroscience. This was the foundation of what today has become the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience in Trondheim. He was also an inspiration and supporter of the National Centre for Optics, Vision and Eye Care that was established at the University of South-Eastern Norway in Kongsberg (2015), with strong support for clinical studies.

Arne Valberg leaves two children. He was a generous but reserved personality, and generated lasting friendships. Through his work as a mentor for visual science in Norway, visual science is here to stay.
