The Icelandic Vision Lab (www.visionlab.is<http://www.visionlab.is/>) advertises a position fully funded by a grant from the Icelandic Research Fund (IRF). The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Sabrina Hansmann-Roth.
The position will be either a three-year Ph.D. position or a two-year postdoctoral position.
The project focuses on the encoding of mid-level visual features. The position involves research into the visual system’s ability to represent complex visual information as visual ensembles and feature distributions using a combination of behavioral studies and computational modelling work. Candidates with an interest in basic research, especially on materials, textures and/or shapes, color perception and ensemble perception/summary statistics are particularly encouraged to apply.
A PhD (for the Postdoc position) or a Masters (or equiv.) degree (for the PhD position) in relevant disciplines are required (e.g., Psychology, Biology, Computer Science). Experience with MATLAB and/or Python, statistical software such as R and experience with computational modelling in vision are all definite benefits, but promising candidates showing enthusiasm to learn these methods will also be considered. Moreover, applicants should have good communication and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills and be able to show initiative. The position also allows for collaborative work with a second Postdoc that will be hired on this project.
The Icelandic Vision Lab offers a stimulating academic environment and has an extended network of collaborations, from all over the world and is in many ways unique in this international aspect.
The successful candidate will join this vibrant community of graduate students, Postdoctoral researchers, and faculty who all work on varied aspects of visual perception. There is good access to all necessary equipment. The lab has high-end equipment for eye movement studies, for EEG, VR, as well as extensive experience with high quality psychophysical studies.
Iceland consistently ranks as one of the best places in the world to live:

Iceland also ranks at the top of the world in terms of gender equality (https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/12/gender-gap-equality-women-parity-countries/). Applicants of any gender are strongly encouraged to apply.
I will be attending the Annual Meeting of the Vision Sciences Society (VSS) at St. Pete’s Beach in May 2023. If you are attending, please contact me and I will be happy to meet with interested candidates.
Please send initial inquiries and applications to: sabrina at hi.is
The starting date is flexible. We are looking for a new member to begin roughly in autumn/winter 2023.
A complete application includes (1) a letter summarizing the applicant's qualifications, interests, research goals and suitability for the position, (2) a complete CV, and (3) the names and email addresses of three references.
