(apologies for cross-posting)

The Nienborg lab at the National Eye Institute (NEI) at NIH, Bethesda, MD, has an opening for a post-doctoral position funded for five years, to work at the intersection of visual neurophysiology, machine learning, and systems neuroscience.

The research in our laboratory aims to uncover how processing in the brain enables flexible use of visual information to guide naturalistic behavior. Current projects in the lab examine the dependence of visual processing on spontaneous movements and behavioral state, neural processing for peripheral vision, adult neural plasticity in the visual system, and neural circuits of decision-making. These topics are addressed in several mammalian species. The lab has active collaborations with machine learning researchers, computational, systems and cellular neuroscientists both at NIH and other leading institutions (e.g. UC Berkeley, University of Maryland). The lab has expertise in behavioral, computational, pharmacological, optogenetic, functional imaging (functional ultrasound), motion capture, and large-scale electrophysiological approaches.

The Nienborg lab is part of the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research (LSR)<https://www.nei.nih.gov/research/research-labs-and-branches/laboratory-sensorimotor-research>, with access to the exceptional resources at NIH for cutting-edge research, and the LSR has a track record of outstanding scientific accomplishments that leverage these resources.

Qualifications:
Candidates with a research background in cognitive, systems, or computational neuroscience, expertise in electrophysiology in behaving animals, and/or highly quantitative data analytic skills are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong programming skills (Matlab or Python) and a commitment to scientific excellence are essential.

How to apply:
To apply, please submit your application materials to Dr. Hendrikje Nienborg at (hendrikje.nienborg at nih.gov<mailto:hendrikje.nienborg at nih.gov>), including a CV with a publication list, a statement of research interests (max. one page), and contact details of two referees.

I will be attending the SFN 2023 meeting in Washington DC and am happy to meet with interested candidates.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Initial appointments will be for 1 year, with possible extension up to 5 years. The NEI offers a competitive salary and comprehensive health insurance. U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

The NIH Bethesda campus is a short metro ride away from downtown Washington, DC.

The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs. DHHS, NIH, and NEI are Equal Opportunity Employers.
