As discussed in the Business meeting at VSS 2023, many VSS members are concerned
about recent changes to the political climate and state legislation that affects
the LGBTQ+ community, racialized minorities, women, gun control, academic
freedom, and freedom of expression more generally. As most of you know, VSS is
committed to a contract with the TradeWinds in Florida for 2024 and 2025. 
 
A survey was sent out to the VSS community in July 2023, around two months after
the meeting. We greatly appreciate the 565 members that responded to the survey,
of which 457 (81%) attended the 2023 meeting.

To address members' concerns about VSS' conference venue, the VSS Board of
Directors is taking two steps:
 
1)    The VSS Board is taking steps to make these next two years in Florida as
welcoming and safe as possible for all VSS members by, for example, adding
gender-neutral restrooms, organizing ride sharing, increasing awareness and
support of our own diverse membership, doing public outreach in the local St.
Pete's Beach community, and helping with the affordability for on-site meals by
scheduling food trucks.
 
2)    The VSS Board is also researching options regarding where to hold the
meeting after 2025. One consideration is to alternate years between the
TradeWinds and one other venue, whose location remains to be determined. From
our 2023 survey, the VSS board is aware that members would value venues that are
affordable and preserve opportunities for informal interactions among our
close-knit community.
 
We are now asking the VSS membership to express their views about various
potential locations. The results of this survey will be provided and discussed
in the business meeting at VSS 2024. We urge you to take the 5 minutes it will
take to complete this survey as soon as possible. We look forward to hearing
your voice and ideas on this important issue.
