[visionlist] Postdoc: evaluating medical imaging systems at the University of Houston:
Gifford, Howard
hgifford at Central.UH.EDU
Sat Mar 2 14:58:02 -04 2024
A postdoctoral position is available in the medical imaging lab of Howard Gifford at UH. The position supports an NIH-funded project with the objective of developing and applying novel statistical models to reliably mimic the performance of experts in imaging trials. Models with sparse training requirements would be useful in the evaluation of imaging technology at all stages of development and application. Our project is principally focused on problems in radiography and nuclear medicine.
The primary duties for the successful applicant include: (1) participating in the development of robust mathematical models for predicting human performance at realistic diagnostic tasks; (2) validation of model performance using appropriate assessment methodologies; and (3) applying the models to design and optimize novel imaging systems. Candidates will be expected to mentor students in the lab, prepare research articles for refereed journals and contribute to securing new sources of funding. They will also be encouraged to explore new projects within the scope of medical imaging research.
The selected candidate will join the UH Biomedical Engineering Department, which has a core research focus on neural, cognitive and rehabilitation engineering, biomedical imaging and genomics and proteomics. Houston is also home to a number of renown medical research facilities, all within ten minutes drive from UH.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in engineering, medical physics or related field. Strong analytical and programming skills are essential, as are good communication skills. Relevant research experience may include imaging physics, visual psychophysics, tomographic reconstruction, simulation methods (particularly Monte Carlo packages for photon transport) and image processing for nuclear medicine and x-ray applications. Individuals with a strong interest in learning about objective-assessment principles to optimize diagnostic imaging are sought.
If interested, please email your CV, a cover letter that briefly summarizes relevant experience and career objectives, and names and contact information for three professional references to hgifford (at) uh.edu.
