With deepest sadness, we share the news that our dear and esteemed VSS colleague and former VSS president Eileen Kowler passed away on December 30, 2024 at the age of 72. Eileen was a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University in Piscataway NJ. Throughout her career, she made fundamental contributions to our understanding of eye movements, demonstrating the importance of attention, cognition, and prediction to the guidance of gaze.

Eileen was a longstanding contributor to VSS who served on our Board of Directors for VSS 2019-2023, and as President for VSS 2022. Eileen played a crucial role in guiding the society through the multi-year challenges of meeting planning during the unprecedented worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Her unflagging energy was most evident in her leadership through the planning of the first return to an in-person meeting in 2022, which included a hybrid component for those unable to travel to Florida.

Eileen’s exceptional scientific achievements and outstanding mentorship were honored by her receipt of VSS’s inaugural Davida Teller Award in 2013. Her inspirational teaching and mentorship touched the lives of many students and trainees throughout her career, many of whom are current VSS members. The value Eileen placed on mentorship was prominent during her term on the board. She strongly believed that our trainees must have a more direct role in the society and the meeting. She created the Student-Postdoctoral Committee (SPC) and shepherded it through its first years. Eileen also promoted revisions to the VSS by-laws to enhance trainee input, advocated for increased diversity and inclusion of membership, and launched the 'just-in-time' poster session for undergraduate students.

Eileen received her PhD in Psychology at the University of Maryland – College Park in 1978 and then completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at New York University. Eileen’s leadership was widespread – she served as a section editor at Journal of Vision and was a Senior Associate Dean at Rutgers, where she established the Perceptual Science core at Rutgers.

Eileen will be deeply missed for her scientific brilliance, her practical wisdom, her principled stances, her warmth, her sense of humor and her generosity of spirit.
