Hi everyone,
Our lab has two openings for PhD students working at the intersection of
developmental visual neuroscience and deep neural network modelling at Free
University Berlin, Germany.
The position is supported by a BMBF (Federal Ministry for Education and
Science) research grant (“GROWUPAI - AI that grows up like the human brain
for improved efficiency and robustness”) and is funded for 3 years,
starting in December 2025 (75% TVöD pay scale). This is a team effort with
the Computational Vision / Artificial Intelligence Lab led by Gemma Roig
(Frankfurt, https://www.cvai.cs.uni-frankfurt.de/).
The goals of the project are 1) to improve vision AI models in
computational efficiency and adversarial robustness by using developmental
neuroscientific data, and 2) to in turn use those improved models to better
predict and explain human brain activity. The team with Gemma Roig will
focus on the modelling aspect, whereas we will focus on the methodological
and theoretical aspects of human developmental neuroscience. Constant and
deep interactions between the teams in Frankfurt and Berlin are integral to
the project and are strongly supported by the PIs.
This is a great opportunity for candidates that are interested in
developmental visual neuroscience, advanced neuroimaging data analysis and
deep neural network modelling. Candidates should ideally have prior
experience with EEG and/or fMRI in persons before adulthood for addressing
questions in visual or developmental neuroscience, good programming skills
(matlab or python), and prior experience or a strong interest in deep
neural network modelling. The working language in the lab is English, but
German skills for dealing with participants are a plus.
The lab features scientists from diverse backgrounds, using a multitude of
methods, with the common goal of determining the mechanisms of the visual
brain. You can find more information about us here:

The lab is part of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience Berlin (
https://www.ewi-psy.fu
berlin.de/en/psychologie/einrichtungen/ccnb/index.html), with excellent
scanning facilities and a collegial atmosphere.
For an informal application, please send a short cover letter, your CV, and
a statement of research interests. I am very happy to also answer any questions
on the position, the project, or our lab - just get in touch over email:

Best,
Radek
