Hi everyone,
As part of the newly established Excellence Cluster "The Adaptive Mind", I
would like to announce a PhD position that will be placed in my lab at
Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany. The position can be filled
anytime from January 2026, once the interviews have been completed. With
the position, you will have the opportunity to interact with an amazing
team of scientists based at JLU Giessen, my team at the Max Planck
Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, and
collaborating researchers around the world.
The project aims at gaining a much deeper understanding of visual
representations than what has previously been understood. Building on our
previous work (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-020-00951-3), we aim
at characterizing dimensions underlying mental object representations for a
much broader range of visual content than investigated previously.
Depending on the progress and interest, there will also be the opportunity
to work on cross-cultural comparisons, using virtual reality to interact
with scenes where we manipulate individual dimensions, and relating these
representations to artificial intelligence systems.
Our labs in Giessen and Leipzig feature a diverse, multidisciplinary and
driven team of young scientists that work on topics around vision science,
cognitive neuroscience, and computational neuroscience.
This specific position requires a strong interest in visual and cognitive
computational neuroscience and very good to excellent programming skills in
Python.
Giessen offers a unique, world-class community of vision researchers, with
many young colleagues collaborating on related topics, regular colloquia
with excellent speakers, and multiple training opportunities for young
scientists.
