Postdoctoral Fellowships at Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, San Francisco

The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute announces two openings in the postdoctoral fellowship program. We are a non-profit institute completely devoted to basic and translational research and offer a unique environment for postdoctoral fellows interested in a research career with the option to apply for the Principal Investigator (PI) track.

Smith-Kettlewell is a uniquely attractive place to receive postdoctoral training in vision research, low vision and blindness. Our research areas include: visual development, strabismus and amblyopia, eye movements, visual attention, brain plasticity, mobility, low vision/blindness rehabilitation and accessibility technologies using approaches such as psychophysics, eye and head tracking, clinical assessment, computational modeling, EEG, fMRI, computer vision, AI, and sensor technologies.

Our fellowship program offers the flexibility to propose and pursue independent research in close collaboration and mentorship with one or more of our experienced principal investigators. During the training period, fellows who are interested in a research career and have achieved necessary milestones are encouraged to apply to submit grants as mentored or independent investigators at Smith-Kettlewell.

The fellowships require a Ph.D., O.D., or M.D. There are two openings for 2026 with two separate deadlines and eligibiliity criteria. The first is through a National Eye Institute training grant to Smith-Kettlewell and requires that the fellow be a US citizen or permanent resident. This fellowship will be awarded for 1 year initially, with funding for an additional year contingent on grant funding. Applications for the training grant fellowship will be accepted until December 10, 2025, and the selected fellow must start before March 31, 2026.

The second opening is supported by Smith-Kettlewell funds and is open to fellows of all nationalities. The deadline for the Smith-Kettlewell application is January 30, 2026, with fellows starting in summer or fall of 2026. This fellowship will be awarded for 2 years.
