We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a funded PhD studentship starting in October 2026 on the development of sensitive retinal biomarkers of disease based on adaptive optics imaging. Through this project you will get to grips with state-of-the art imaging, simulation, and machine learning techniques and develop a tool that will help clinical researchers to better understand how retinal diseases develop and progress.

You will be embedded in an interdisciplinary research group, working with clinical and academic collaborators. The project is co-supervised by Dr Laura Young (Biosciences Institute, Newcastle University) and Dr Rahele Kafieh (Department of Engineering, Durham University), who will provide training and support in high-resolution retinal imaging and machine learning.

Further information about the studentship is available here:

Fees are fully funded for UK students and there are funds for a limited number of international candidates.
Application deadline: 1pm UK time on Thursday 4th December 2025
