Nominations Now Open for Three VSS Awards

The Vision Sciences Society is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for three major Society awards: the Ken Nakayama Medal for Excellence in Vision Science, the Davida Teller Award, and the Elsevier/VSS Young Investigator Award. We invite our community to recognize and honor outstanding scientists whose work has made significant contributions to the field of vision science. Awards will be presented at the 2026 meeting in Florida.

Ken Nakayama Medal for Excellence in Vision Science

The Ken Nakayama Medal was created in honor of Professor Ken Nakayama’s numerous innovations, leadership, and consistent excellence in the vision sciences. The Medal recognizes any vision scientist who has made exceptional, significant, or lasting contributions to the field. Contributions may be fundamental, clinical, or applied. This award is for senior investigators, defined as 25 or more years since earning their terminal degree. For full nomination instructions, see <https://w7lrdvwab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001z5CG3awmGI2Dh15JpD1Af2vfdbHfh_3TVojdJgx-CQgSZS5gI3cI3M9eekeiRoyrgR8wPWr8GagyERaKKkenpg-ErKzXczySrioFf-8ENXRy-1ALAsKvZCG5NCMrsAGArW0bZnul7mrEN3XnwZc---mD-rXdV_vOiRAQCEcKfyNwyNVYIKm67IJJ7Uedxptd&c=3YTjScj_7Php0DYUgbmRSZO11gsTuqdAlezoJJZv153bugdQQ99wGw==&ch=205RyD5EsjbTlljksSJoejWD3dXpipiE6cTkehgPFoosXxW_M0gbsQ==> Ken Nakayama Medal for Excellence in Vision Science.

Davida Teller Award

The Davida Teller Award is in honor of Professor Davida Teller’s exceptional scientific achievements, commitment to equity, and strong history of mentoring. Beginning in 2026, the award will recognize a mid-career vision scientist who has made exceptional, significant, and/or lasting contributions to vision science and has also served as an outstanding mentor. The contributions may be fundamental, clinical, or applied. Mid-career investigators are defined as those with 10-25 years of active research/teaching since earning their terminal degree (excluding times that typically “stop the clock” in academic careers). Elsevier/VSS Young Investigator Award

Sponsored by Vision Research, the Elsevier/VSS Young Investigator Award recognizes an early-career vision scientist who has made outstanding contributions to the field. The nature of this work can be fundamental, clinical, or applied. The award selection committee gives highest weight to the significance, originality and potential long-range impact of the work. The selection committee may also consider the nominee’s previous participation in VSS conferences or activities, and substantial obstacles that the nominee may have overcome in their careers. The awardee will write a review to be published in Vision Research.
