Title: Towards Efficient Volumetric Video: Compression and Standardization of Gaussian Splats

Abstract: 
Recent advances in novel view synthesis have enabled high-quality volumetric video from real-world imagery, bringing photorealistic immersive media closer to practical deployment. 3D Gaussian Splatting achieves real-time rendering, but at the cost of significantly higher memory usage compared to NeRF, exposing a key trade-off between speed and storage. Efficient compression is therefore essential to reduce memory footprints while preserving real-time performance. This talk will introduce GSCodec Studio, a toolbox integrating modular compression techniques for Gaussian Splats, followed by an exploration of 4D scene representations and corresponding compression methods for volumetric video. Finally, I will discuss recent exploration efforts within MPEG toward standardizing Gaussian Splatting codecs to enable broad industry adoption.

Bio: 
Yiyi Liao is an Assistant Professor at Zhejiang University. She received her Ph.D. from Zhejiang University and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. Her research focuses on 3D computer vision and immersive media, with particular interests in 3D scene reconstruction, generation, and compression. She has served as a Program Chair for 3DV 2025 and as an Area Chair for conferences including CVPR and NeurIPS. She is also a Co-Chair of the Ad-hoc Group on Gaussian Splat Coding under ISO/IEC MPEG. She was the winner of the IEEE MMSP 2025 Multimedia Rising Star.
