Call for Papers – Special Session SMILE (FG 2026)

SMILE: Silent Motion Interpretation and Lip-based Evaluation

Silent Motion Interpretation and Lip-based Evaluation (SMILE) is a Special Session at the 20th IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition dedicated to the analysis, modeling, and evaluation of lip-centric and silent visual communication.
The session aims to bring together researchers working on visual speech, silent interaction, lip-motion-based biometrics, and related human-centered AI technologies, with a strong focus on audio-free or lip-dominant modalities.

SMILE welcomes original research contributions addressing theoretical advances, methodological innovations, evaluation protocols, and real-world applications related to silent motion understanding and lip-based analysis.

Topics of Interest (include, but are not limited to):

  * Silent and audio-visual lip reading

  * Visual speech recognition and lip-based expression analysis

  * Lip-motion-based biometric identification and authentication

  * Sign language recognition enriched with lip-motion cues

  * Evaluation methodologies, benchmarks, and dataset bias analysis

  * Generative, self-supervised, and cross-modal learning for lip features

  * Robust lip reading under occlusion, pose, and illumination variations

  *   Human-centered, assistive, and accessibility-oriented AI systems

  * Deepfake generation and detection based on lip motion and facial dynamics

  * 3D modeling and reconstruction of lip, face, and head motion

Important Dates:

  *   Abstract submission deadline: January 9, 2026

  *   Paper submission deadline: January 15, 2026

Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE FG 2026 proceedings (IEEE Xplore).
The session is closely aligned with the Silent Lipreading research community and related benchmarking initiatives.
