Dear all,

I’m delighted to share that Gordon Legge has just published a new book, Low Vision: What It’s Like to Live with Vision Loss (Book2026 <https://legge.psych.umn.edu/publications/low-vision-what-its-live-vision-loss-book-2026>)

As many of you know, Gordon’s work has profoundly advanced our understanding of low vision, including its effects on reading, object recognition, and everyday navigation.

While the book focuses on low vision, it also speaks to a much broader question about human vision and perception: how the interplay between constraints and adaptability in our visual system shapes what we see. What sets this book apart is that Gordon writes as both a vision scientist and someone living with low vision, weaving research and personal experience throughout. As you read, you hear his voice guiding you through personal stories, vision science, and clinical insights, illuminating how our visual system can be both vulnerable and resilient.

On a personal note, as one of his former trainees, I was repeatedly struck and humbled by how Gordon could immediately spot errors and subtle details in my figures and equations that escaped me, even with what we call “normal” vision. With this book, he now invites all of us to see the world through his unique perspective! I hope you enjoy it :)

To celebrate the release, Gordon will host two events on Friday, May 29:
