Choosing the right tool for the job: Techniques for precise stimulus presentation and accurate measurements of responses

You programmed your experiment to present specific stimuli at a precise time while collecting your participants' responses. How do you know if your stimuli will be faithfully reproduced? How do you know if they will be presented at the intended time? How do you know if your participants' responses will be recorded with accuracy and precision?

During this workshop we will examine the relationship between the intended stimulus presentation and the actual visual and auditory output, then verify its accuracy using a variety of appropriate instruments. We will also demonstrate techniques to synchronise visual and auditory stimulus presentations with eye movements and reaction times. Using Psychtoolbox and equipment provided by Cambridge Research Systems, you will make measurements and compare results obtained on different computers to learn how to choose the right tools for your next experiment.

Benefits: Attendees will be able to:
*             Plan the appropriate stimulus given the equipment available.
*             Verify if the actual stimulus reproduction matches the intended stimulus.
*             Understand mismatches between the intended stimulus and actual stimulus reproduction and make alternative plans.

Intended audience: Those who wish to understand how to select appropriate stimuli that can be faithfully reproduced with their existing equipment. Those interested in generating and presenting synchronous multimodal stimuli on computer-controlled displays.
