Dear colleagues,

We have reopened the recruitment for one remaining PhD position within the IndiBrain Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network. All other positions in the network have now been filled.

Project 5: Modeling Individual Brain Differences using Deep Learning & Vision Neuroscience

This fully funded PhD project is hosted at Tilburg University (Department of Intelligent Systems and the Research Center for Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence). The project investigates how biologically realistic deep neural networks can be used to model individual differences in the visual system and bridge the gap between computational models and neuroimaging. The successful candidate will develop and train biologically inspired neural networks, simulate the effects of individual variability and lesions, and apply these models to neuroimaging data from healthy participants and patients. The project includes funded secondments at Adastra (Germany) and the University of Pisa (Italy).

The position offers:

  * A fully funded 4-year PhD appointment (extending beyond the standard 3-year MSCA funding period to match the Dutch PhD trajectory).
  * Access to dedicated high-performance GPU computing facilities.
  * Training within the IndiBrain Doctoral Network, including international workshops, summer schools, and conferences.
  * Collaboration with leading researchers in computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, artificial intelligence, and vision science across Europe.

We are seeking candidates with:

  * Strong programming and quantitative skills.
  * Experience with machine learning and deep neural networks.
  * A strong interest in computational neuroscience and visual perception.

Experience with computational neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI, population receptive field modeling) or biologically inspired neural network modeling is advantageous but not required.

As this position is funded through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network, applicants must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule. In particular, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding recruitment. Applicants must also not already hold a doctoral degree.

Application deadline: 16 August 2026

We would greatly appreciate it if you could share this opportunity with suitable candidates or colleagues who may know interested applicants.

Thank you for helping us disseminate this opportunity.

Kind regards,
--
