Dear AI scientist/engineer/student/enthusiast,

Please, consider attending to our next Excellence Lecture:

*_A Personal View of the Past and the Future of Automated Algorithm Design_*

*/Dr. /**/Thomas Stützle/**/ (/**/Université libre de Bruxelles
(ULB)/**/) /*

*Abstract: *The design and development of algorithms is very
time-consuming and difficult for a number of reasons, including the
complexity of the problems being tackled, the large number of degrees of
freedom when designing an algorithm and setting its numerical
parameters, and the difficulties of algorithm analysis due to heuristic
biases and stochasticity. Fortunately, for some time, advances in
automatic algorithm configuration and design methods have made this a
more "straightforward" process.

In this talk, I will discuss some of the advances we have achieved over
the past 25 years and highlight techniques of automatic configuration of
algorithms, the automatic configuration of multi-objective algorithms,
the automatic configuration for anytime algorithms, and the automatic
design of SLS algorithms via the EMILI framework. Towards the end of the
talk I will discuss some aspects of the large language models and how
they have changed and will continue to change our perspective on
automatic configuration and design of the algorithms.

* Lecturer Short CV:***Thomas Stützle is with the Belgian F.R.S.-FNRS
(National Fund for Scientific Research) and works at the IRIDIA
laboratory of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. He
received the Diplom (German equivalent of an MSc degree) in business
engineering from Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Germany, in 1994, and his
PhD degree and habilitation in computer science, both from the Computer
Science Department of Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany, in 1998
and 2004, respectively. He joined the F.R.S.-FNRS as a researcher in
October 2005 and is currently a research director.

He has co-authored three books among which are “Stochastic Local Search:
Foundations and Applications” (Morgan Kaufmann) and “Ant Colony
Optimization” (MIT Press), both of which have become standard references
in their respective areas. His other publications include more than 250
articles in journals, international conferences or edited books many of
which are highly cited. In fact, his research contributions received so
far more than 73,000 citations in Google Scholar and his h-index is 93.
His main research interests are in stochastic local search algorithms,
multi-objective optimization, large-scale benchmark studies and
automatic configuration and design of algorithms.
