Research in the
lab is based on the fundamental principle that vision systems are matched to
the tasks the organism performs in its natural environment. The
research involves measuring the statistical properties of natural stimuli,
performing computational and mathematical analyses to determine how a visual
system should exploit those properties to perform its tasks, and then using
those computational analyses to formulate principled hypotheses which are
tested in psychophysical and neurophysiological experiments. Current
projects include developing and testing theories of (1) object-identification
accuracy, (2) fixation-search time and accuracy, (3) depth and motion estimation,
(4) 3D-surface-orientation estimation, and (5) perceptual grouping.<span></span></span></p>
