Two recent technologies facilitate this study of light-driven neural activity in vivo. First, an adaptive optics camera allows one to visualize individual cones in vivo and classify them on the basis of their spectral type. Coupled together with a high speed retinal tracker to control eye movements, this instrument allows one to conduct visual psychophysics by targeting stimuli on the living retina at a cellular scale. The second technology is phase-resolved optical coherence tomography, a tool akin to classical interferometry that allows one to monitor the minute biophysical changes (nanometer/millisecond resolution) in cones accompanying phototransduction.

The scope of ongoing projects range from optical engineering (optical design and assembly, hardware/software for image acquisition/processing/analysis/interpretation) to scientific inquiry (human spectral cone composition, retinal circuits underlying spatial and color vision, retinal optophysiology). The candidate will be encouraged to pursue independent interests in addition to participating in ongoing research projects and collaborations.
