Although all cancers manifest themselves as an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, they are actually distinct neoplastic diseases that possess different genetic and epigenetic alterations, underlying molecular mechanisms, histopathologies and clinical outcomes. Despite significant advances in the understanding of the principal mechanisms leading to various cancer types, less progress has been made toward developing patient-specific treatments. Advanced mathematical and computational models could play a significant role in examining the most effective patient-specific therapies. There is a pressing need to design and develop computational strategies to harness cancer data in an accurate and efficient fashion.</p><p class=MsoNormal>The purpose of the International Symposium on Mathematical and Computational Oncology (ISMCO) is to provide a common interdisciplinary forum for researchers, scientists, engineers and clinical oncologists throughout the world to present and discuss their latest research findings, ideas, developments and applications in mathematical and computational oncology. In particular, ISMCO aspires to enable the forging of stronger relationships among physical sciences, computer science, data science, engineering and oncology with the goal of developing new insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of malignancies.</p><p class=MsoNormal>The symposium will consist of invited and contributed presentations dealing with all aspects of mathematical and computational oncology. In addition, it will include keynote presentations, tutorials, special tracks, panel discussions, and a poster session. A “best paper award” will also be sponsored. The symposium’s proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. LNCS publications are indexed by SCOPUS.</p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Topics</p><p class=MsoNormal>ISMCO seeks papers describing contributions to the state of the art and practice in mathematical and computational oncology. Work-in-progress papers, demos, experimental studies, open-source developments, and visionary papers are also welcome. Papers submitted to ISMCO must not have been previously published and must not be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Each paper will receive at 2-3 blind reviews and should not contain names or other information revealing authors’ identity. Papers will be reviewed with an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state of the art in the field. Selection criteria include accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and significance of results, and presentation quality. Papers should be submitted in camera-ready format. The length should match that intended for final publication (visit the ISMCO website for submission details).</p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Attendance</p><p class=MsoNormal>At least one author of each accepted paper must complete the symposium registration and present the paper at the symposium, in order for their paper to be included in the proceedings and symposium program. If none of the authors cannot attend the symposium and present their paper(s) due to unforeseen reasons, they should make arrangements with another ISMCO attendee to present their paper(s). Video or Skype presentations are not acceptable.</p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Tutorials and Special Tracks</p><p class=MsoNormal>Proposals are invited for tutorials and special tracks on topics relevant to ISMCO. Tutorials should address the interests of various individuals in the field of mathematical and computational oncology including graduate students, researchers and educators from academia, and researchers and practitioners from industry and government. Special tracks will take place during the main dates of the symposium and are intended to stimulate in-depth discussions in special areas relevant to the symposium theme.
