Key factors include quantum fluctuations in light absorption, physiological optics, photo-transduction, eye movements, and signal processing by retinal and early cortical circuitry. It is now possible to capture our understanding of these factors in closely reasoned quantitative computational models. Moreover, the implications of early vision on performance can be clarified by calculations that link these initial visual representations to performance on well-defined tasks. Such calculations may be defined analytically (e.g., ideal observers) or implemented using machine learning techniques.
