style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">I hope to recruit one or two new PhD students into my
Eye Movements and Visual Cognition (EyeCog) lab at Stony Brook University, with
positions starting in late August 2019. Opportunities would exist to work on
several US-funded (National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health)
projects, all of which use computer modeling methods (e.g., deep networks,
reinforcement learning) to predict human attention behavior, as measured by
changes in eye fixation. </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 13pt"><FONT
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">Interested applicants need to apply for Fall 2019
admission to the Cognitive Science program (part of the Psychology Department)
at Stony Brook University (deadline December 15; <A
style='href: "https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/psychology/graduate/application_instructions"'
target=_blank>https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/psychology/graduate/application_instructions</A>).
Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in attention
research, eye-tracking, computer vision, or machine learning, and ideally some
combination thereof. However, applicants who lack this experience but possess a
keen interest in acquiring expertise in two or more of these fields will also be
considered. Applicants with experience in EEG, or are from minority or
under-represented groups, are also encouraged to apply.<SPAN>
</SPAN></FONT><SPAN><FONT style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt"> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 13pt"><FONT
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">Students admitted into the PhD program receive a stipend
of just under $20,000 for the academic year, and the Psychology department uses
a range of mechanisms to provide $3,000 to $6,000 in additional support over the
summer months when regular semester classes are not in session. Because the
EyeCog lab is currently well funded, students working with me will likely
receive summer support at the high end of this range, although this cannot be
promised.<SPAN> </SPAN>The stipend package is guaranteed for five years
(assuming good standing in the program), allowing students the time they need to
learn their field, and to develop a CV that will be competitive for postdoc,
faculty, and industry positions.</FONT><SPAN><FONT
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt"> </FONT></SPAN></P>

style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">Geographically, Stony Brook University is located on the
bucolic and green north shore of Long Island, New York, with beautiful
white-sand beaches about 25 km to the south and New York City about 90 km to the
west, with easy access by train from campus.</FONT></P>
