The successful candidate will work on a research project funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society that will investigate the role of different inhibitory interneurons in encoding visual stimulus features, visual learning and task-dependent attention. The successful candidate will also contribute to undergraduate teaching including lectures and practicals in the Department of Psychology.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>The research will combine long-term two-photon calcium imaging, electrophysiology and optogenetic manipulation of cell types in visual cortical areas and decision-making brain areas to understand how mice (including mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders) solve different visually-guided decision-making tasks, including detection and discrimination tasks. We will take advantage of both paradigms to provide controlled stimuli in head-fixed mice (Khan, Poort et al., Nat Neurosci 2018) and paradigms in freely behaving mice (Meyer, Poort et al. Neuron, 2018). The successful candidate will also assist with the supervision of undergraduate student projects and work closely with graduate students to contribute to the development of their research skills.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>The successful applicant will join a supportive team in a multi-disciplinary research environment with collaborations with experts in visual decision-making in rodents and humans, and experts in computational neuroscience. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>Applicants should have completed (or should be about to submit) a PhD in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, biology, or other relevant disciplines. If applicants have not yet submitted a PhD at application, proof of thesis submission will need to be provided before the start date of the appointment. Previous experience with imaging, optogenetics, and behavioural training in rodents, and data analysis (e.g. Matlab or Python) will be valuable. Previous undergraduate teaching experience is highly desirable. The position is available from May 2019 onwards (start date is negotiable).
