When I was a PhD student, traveling to the US with little money and little English, he welcomed not only to his lab but also to his house, and took the time to engage me in long conversations about his research and many other things. <div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">He touched the lives of many people beyond those he mentored directly. Sad to say, Charlie Gross, one of the great single-unit electrophysiologists (and one of my best undergraduate professors) has died at age 83.</div>

He is probably most famous for his discovery of single cells in macaque cortex that responded best to faces, hands, etc. </div>
