<html><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html charset=utf-8"><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html charset=utf-8"></head><body style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;" class=""><div class=""><p class=""><b class=""><span class="" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Clinician Scientist in Diseases of Vitreous, Retina, and Choroid</span></b></p><p class=""><span class="" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a highly motivated clinician scientist with a collaborative spirit who is interested in basic, translational and clinical research in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and/or related chorioretinal disease. <o:p class=""></o:p></span></p><p class=""><span class="" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has 46 full-time clinical and research faculty and is based in the Callahan Eye Hospital (CEH), part of the UAB Health System. The CEH boasts the second highest number of retinal procedures in the US, an unusual depth and breadth of retinal pathology due to service area demographics, 16 eye operating rooms in a dedicated facility, and a newly expanded network of satellite clinics. The Department is 5<sup class="">th</sup> in the Blue Ridge ranking for current NIH-funded research for ophthalmology departments nationwide and has received unrestricted grant support from Research to Prevent Blindness since 1988. This interdisciplinary group spans ophthalmology and visual sciences, engineering, epidemiology, neuroscience and optometry and is centered around a shared laboratory, clinical, and translational research environment. Research strengths in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy research spanning cell biology, stem cell biology, pathology/pathobiology, functional testing, high-resolution imaging, epidemiology, and health services. <o:p class=""></o:p></span></p><p class=""><span class="" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Responsibilities will include active participation in research, resident education and patient care with at least 50% time dedicated to research. The candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded research program and participate in our rich environment for advances in diseases of vitreous, retina, and choroid within the Department, the Callahan Eye Hospital, and the UAB vision community at large.<o:p class=""></o:p></span></p><p class=""><span class="" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Candidates must have graduated from a fully accredited ophthalmology residency program and be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Alabama.
