A postdoctoral scholar position is available at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, California) for study of multisensory perception (both behavioral and neuroimaging) in the visually impaired. The goal of this project is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the changes in multisensory integration of audition and vision that result from degenerative conditions such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), and Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION). The proposed studies will provide crucial insights into key characteristics of functional reorganization in the human brain, and will also pave the way for the next generation of multisensory aids, multisensory visual prostheses, and rehabilitation approaches.<br><br>As an example, here is a link to a recent Vision Sciences Society (VSS) abstract on “Mapping Audio-Visual Crossmodal Interactions in the Visually Impaired”, a key project within this research effort:<br><a href="https://jov.arvojournals.org/article.aspx?articleid=2771393">https://jov.arvojournals.org/article.aspx?articleid=2771393</a><br><br>The postdoctoral scholar will join a collaborative effort that is ongoing among Caltech, USC, and Occidental College. The postdoctoral scholar position is in the Shimojo Psychophysics Laboratory led by Professor Shinsuke Shimojo at Caltech. The postdoctoral scholar will also closely collaborate with Professor Armand R. Tanguay, Jr. and Dr. Noelle R. B. Stiles at USC, as well as with Professor Carmel A. Levitan at Occidental College.<br><br>Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. and/or M.D., and have relevant research experience that might include, but is not limited to, experimental psychology, multisensory psychophysics, cognitive neuroscience, and neuroimaging techniques (such as fMRI and EEG). Experience with blind or low vision patient groups is beneficial, but is not a requirement. Experimental and technical skills including programming (such as in MATLAB or Python) are highly desirable. Salary will be based on NIH guidelines, and will be commensurate with experience. The position is available immediately, although consideration will also be given to candidates who would prefer a later start date. The postdoctoral scholar position is initially for one year, and is potentially renewable upon performance for up to 4 years.<br><br>Caltech is an equal opportunity employer, and encourages applications from women and minorities.<br><br>Candidates should send a CV, a statement of research skills and interests, and a list of 3 references to Professor Shinsuke Shimojo (<a href="mailto:sshimojo@caltech.edu">sshimojo@caltech.edu</a>).</div>
