When I traveled to ECVP1987 in Varna, Bulgaria, he was extraordinarily welcoming, and interested in my work. We met again many times over the years, usually at ECVP. I recall (vaguely) one evening in Bristol (ECVP1988) when he and his colleagues educated me in the proper ingestion of vodka. His work, especially on the temporal dynamics of spatial vision, was a great influence. I will always remember him as a smiling, curious, generous soul. Professor Vassilev was a prominent Bulgarian scientist in the field of vision. After obtaining a PhD at the Institute of Physiology “I.P. Pavlov” while working with professor V. D. Glezer, he was actively involved in the study of several key issues in the field of visual psychophysics and electrophysiology. He had a long and successful career as a Professor of Visual Physiology at the Institute of Physiology in Bulgaria where he founded his laboratory “Visual Information Processing” in 1978. He led a wide range of original research studying the latency of visual perception as well the latency of individual waves of visual evoked potentials at different spatial frequency, perception of orientation, flicker perimetry, the short wavelength cone pathway etc. In 1987, he organized the Tenth European Conference of Visual Perception in Varna, Bulgaria, giving the unique opportunity to young scientists to meet world-renowned scientists visiting Bulgaria for the first time.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><o:p class=""> </o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt; line-height: 15.693333625793457px; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-US" class="">With the passing of Professor Vassilev the Bulgarian and international academic community have lost a brilliant scientist.
